Kelp Farming - Churchill Fellowship Report
Golden Kelp {Ecklonia radiata}
It's hard to believe it's been over a year since we left for our world seaweed tour with the Churchill Trust! Looking back at all the inspirational kelp farmers we met, and collaborating with local farmers, marine authorities and revolutionary conservationists, we have begun the exciting journey of kelp farming on the South Coast of NSW, Australia.
Part 1 of our journey explores the underworld of Bermagui Bay, where we collected mature Ecklonia radiata specimens to extract spores for breeding in our laboratory.
Our efforts expanded to multiple dives along the south coast and a research trip to Tasmania to meet Ecklonia radiata reproduction experts, Margie Rule and Cayne Layton. We also met with Craig Sanderson, marine biologist ecologist, amongst other seaweed and Sea Care experts and professionals.
Now back in our own laboratory with state of the art incubation equipment, we will have some exciting news to share with you shortly.
In the meantime, read the full report on the Seaweed Aquaculture of the world, in Jo Laneβs investigative report on introducing kelp farming to Australia in her Churchill Fellowship paper.
