How to WIN 2021 - A Breakfast Broth Your Belly Will Love
Wining in Twenty Twenty One, will require us to be at our health A game!
Taking in the woes of the new world, on top of our personal lives, can sometimes be the straw that breaks the camels back. Often our personal lives and schedules have become so packed full of responsibilities and activities. Often, we don’t give ourselves time to stop and breathe!
The good news is, at the end of the first decade of the 21st Century, we now have access to produce that is sustainable and less damaging to our bodies and ourselves.

January is a good time to help our bodies catch up with some detoxification - giving our organs a chance to rest and recover. It’s a good time to think about removing the toxins we consume, and to figure out whether particular foods cause problems for you.
One more important thing to keep in mind as you detox is self-care and reflection. Take some extra time to cook yourself food your body will love, soak in the tub with a seaweed soak, go for a walk or swim, meditate, read a great book, do a powdered kelp face mask…just take time for you in some way. The goal is for you to be more in tune with your body, how it responds to the food you eat, and what it likes, dislikes, and needs.
To begin your detox, consider lowering your intake of the following:
Caffeine and alcohol - this should be obvious!
Dairy, - try an organic almond or coconut milk as they also have loads of calcium.
Gluten - find gluten free bread, crisps and opt for quinoa or check out this long list of gluten free options here.
Corn
Nightshades, - tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, potatoes.
Refined sugar
Shellfish (for the omnivores among us.)
White rice
Eggs and soy
Processed food - this is important to lower your intake of unknown chemical preservatives and additives.
Kelp For Health Breakfast Broth:
Starting the day with a vegan broth can feel so comforting in any season, + making a base broth early in the week takes most of the work out of it! Before serving, all you have to do is fortify the broth with some incredibly flavourful mix-ins, like miso (watch our for soy!) and fresh ground turmeric.
INGREDIENTS:
1 tablespoon of Powdered Kelp, alginated (mixed) in 1 cup of hot water.
1 teaspoon chickpea miso
⅛ teaspoon fresh grated ginger
Scant ⅛ teaspoon turmeric
Pinch of black pepper
METHOD:
Bring the kelp powder alginate water to a simmer in a saucepan.
In a small bowl, whisk together the miso, ginger, turmeric, and black pepper.
Slowly add in the warm broth and hot water and whisk until fully diluted.
Finish with a squeeze of lemon and add scallions and cilantro if desired.
Keep in an air tight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
IMPORTANT TIP:
Don’t reduce your intake of caffeine, alcohol (and cigarettes) dramatically if you have been consuming them rapidly for a prolonged periods of time as your body may show signs of withdrawal.
Always seek advice from you doctor or nutritionist for specific dietary requirements or issues.
